What is an herb grinder?
An herb grinder is a device with sharp metal teeth aligned in a way used to shred material inside the grinding cylinder. There are typically holes in the grinding chamber that allow crushed herbs & spices to fall through into the catch basin. In a 3-layer grinder, a screen is added to the bottom of the catch basin to separate and collect the essence of the harvest. Grinder cylinder designs can be layered even higher to achieve the desired grade of pulp.
History of the handheld herb grinder The grinder has it’s roots in separating pulp from cellulose in industrial settings dating back to the early 20th century. In 1905, hand held grinders were still thought to be a novelty. However, the slow adaptation of this centerless grinder design shrank into the hands of individuals during the 1960’s. The anatomy of early grinders proved to be cumbersome, though. The holes to the catch basin had yet to be envisioned. People would have to frequently clean out the grinder’s teeth, which only allowed for small batches.
The catch basin revolutionized the handheld herb grinder. Not only did it solve perpetually having to clean out the teeth, but it also provided a storage container in the catch basin. Long gone are the days of having to grind your herbs onto a folded piece of paper or a rolling tray. Enter the 21st century. Modern handheld herb grinders come in whimsical designs and hefty functional design in a wide variety of sizes. Though, usually metal, lighter weight plastic and acrylic versions have popped up on the scene. However, plastic teeth wear down, and is not as durable as an aluminum or stainless steal grinder.
