What is a water bong?
The word bong comes from Thailand, from the word baung, which refers to a bamboo shoot used for smoking. Water bongs are filtration devices used for smoking tobacco. Some water bongs are equipped with a hole known as a carburetor. The “carb” is covered during the burning process, and uncovered to allow a quick expulsion of the smoke into the cockles of the lungs.
In Russia, 2400 years ago, the Scythian chieftains used golden water bongs to get the job done. However, it wasn’t until the Ming Dynasty, via the Silk Road, that water bongs hit the mainstream. Throughout history, water bongs have often been buried with their owners. During the Bronze Age and beyond, water bongs of the nobility were made of precious metals and encrusted with various jewels.
Regardless what the water bong is made from, the construction generally consists of a bowl, a stem, possibly percolators and/or recyclers, a smoke chamber, hopefully a splash guard, a mouthpiece, and last but not least, the some water. This general formation traps ash particles from the bowl by rinsing and cooling it through the water. In the modern era, people often use ice cubes or use water bongs with freezable coils as an added coolant to the smoke.
